Questions, answered
These are the questions families and athletes ask SwimTec most: how private one-on-one lessons work, starting ages, adaptive lessons, the Gainesville and Orlando pools, what a stroke analysis session produces, and how coaching fits alongside a club team. Every answer stands on its own.
Learn to Swim
Are SwimTec swim lessons private or group classes?
Every SwimTec swim lesson is private, one-on-one instruction. There are no group classes, so the coach’s full attention stays with one swimmer (or, for parent and infant lessons, one caregiver and baby) for the entire session.
What age can a child start swim lessons?
SwimTec’s parent and infant program welcomes babies from 6 months old, with a parent or caregiver in the water the whole lesson. Independent toddler lessons are available from around age 2, and kids lessons from age 5.
Is it too late for an adult to learn to swim?
No. SwimTec’s adult lessons are private and designed for adults at every experience level, whether that means swimming for the first time, working through a fear of water, or refining an existing stroke.
Where are SwimTec swim lessons held?
SwimTec offers lessons at its own indoor, heated, appointment-only facility in Gainesville, Florida, and at Rosen Aquatic & Fitness Center in Orlando, Florida.
Is the Gainesville facility indoors and heated?
Yes. SwimTec’s Gainesville facility is a private, climate-controlled indoor training center with heated water year-round, so lessons are not affected by outdoor weather or temperature.
Do lessons run year-round?
Yes. Because the Gainesville facility is indoor and heated, SwimTec runs lessons year-round rather than pausing for a season.
Do I need an appointment, or can we drop in?
SwimTec lessons are appointment-only. Book a specific coach, program, and time in the SwimTec booking app before arriving.
Do you offer lessons for swimmers who need an adaptive approach?
Yes. SwimTec’s adaptive (special needs) program is private, one-on-one instruction with pace, communication, and lesson structure adapted to the individual swimmer’s needs.
Can lessons help a nervous or fearful swimmer?
Yes. Because every lesson is private, the coach can slow down, rebuild trust, and adjust pace for a nervous swimmer of any age without a group waiting or watching.
Can lessons prepare a swimmer for a swim team tryout?
Yes. SwimTec’s Swim Team Prep program builds the four competitive strokes, streamlines, breathing, and lap-swimming endurance a swimmer needs before a first team tryout.
What is SwimTec’s approach to progression?
SwimTec’s curriculum is organized around three pillars: water safety, water comfort, and learning to swim like a swimmer. A coach tracks a swimmer’s progress across all three rather than a single skill checklist.
Does the same coach teach both beginners and competitive swimmers?
Yes. SwimTec’s coaches, many of them competitive and professional swimmers themselves, teach beginner and adaptive swim lessons alongside 1:1 stroke analysis for competitive athletes.
How do I choose the right lesson for my child?
Use the lesson finder on the SwimTec home page or the Learn to Swim page: three quick questions about who is swimming, their goal and the location point to the right starting program, with its current price.
How do I book a swim lesson?
Choose a program on swimtec.com, then open the SwimTec booking app to see current coaches, locations, and available appointment times before reserving a session.
Swim Performance
What is 1:1 stroke coaching?
1:1 stroke coaching at SwimTec is personalized swim instruction focused entirely on one athlete. Unlike a team practice, where a coach must divide attention among many swimmers, a private session lets the coach analyze technique, identify weaknesses, and build an improvement plan specific to that swimmer.
Is stroke coaching only for competitive swimmers?
No. SwimTec coaches competitive swimmers, summer-league swimmers, triathletes, masters swimmers, and water polo athletes preparing for championship meets. Any swimmer who wants to move more efficiently through the water can benefit from private technique work.
How is private stroke coaching different from swim team practice?
Swim team practice builds conditioning, race fitness, and training habits. Stroke coaching focuses on one swimmer’s technique, efficiency, and skill development, and is meant to complement a team program rather than replace it.
Will stroke coaching interfere with a swimmer’s club training?
No. Most swimmers get more value from club practice after receiving technical coaching, since better technique lets them make full use of every yard they swim during team workouts.
What strokes does SwimTec coach?
SwimTec coaches all four competitive strokes, freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, along with starts, turns, streamlines, underwater dolphin kicking, race strategy, and overall swimming efficiency.
What age should a swimmer start stroke coaching?
There is no set age. SwimTec works with youth swimmers, high-school athletes, collegiate swimmers, masters swimmers, and triathletes, whenever a swimmer is ready to improve technique and learn more about the sport.
How long is a stroke coaching session?
Most SwimTec stroke coaching sessions run one hour or longer, enough time to evaluate technique, make corrections, practice drills, and review video footage.
Does SwimTec use video analysis?
Yes. Video analysis is used during most sessions. Seeing their own stroke on video often helps swimmers understand a technical correction faster than verbal feedback alone.
Do swimmers receive their session video?
Yes. Session video is uploaded to a private SwimTec storage account for the athlete, and shared with a home swim-team coach if the swimmer requests it, so everyone stays aligned on the swimmer’s development.
Do swimmers receive drills to practice after the session?
Yes. Every swimmer leaves with customized drills and focus points, designed for what came up in that session, to reinforce what was learned and guide continued practice.
How often should a swimmer attend stroke coaching?
For most athletes, SwimTec recommends once or twice a month. That cadence gives enough time to work changes into regular team practice while still receiving ongoing feedback and refinement.
Does SwimTec work with a swimmer’s existing club coach?
Yes. When requested, SwimTec coaches share video analysis and technical observations with a swimmer’s home club coach, supporting the work the team is already doing rather than working around it.
Does SwimTec offer swimming-specific strength training or mental preparedness coaching?
Yes, with specific coaches. Some SwimTec coaches offer swimming-specific strength, mobility, and nutrition sessions, and sports-psychology and mentorship sessions, alongside technical stroke coaching. Availability is coach-specific; see individual coach pages for current options.
